A Quiet Place – review (spoiler-free). Rating: 5/5

I went to watch the movie A Quiet Place about a week ago. I had heard it was good and I like the 2 main stars Emily Blunt and John Krasinski. To be honest I have not seen much of John Krasinski but seen several things Emily Blunt has been in and both of them are always great when see them on TV on stuff like Graham Norton show and one of the many US late night talk shows.

Now before I continue, I have said this is a spoiler free review BUT if you have not watched this movie and want to know absolutely nothing about it. Stop now.

On to the review

If you didn’t know, A Quiet Place is a horror movie about a family living in the relative near future, in a world where everyone has had to go into hiding and live in a world of silence because of creatures which hunt by sound. The movie is probably more a “thriller with a monster” movie than “horror”. There is not gore really but you get a few jump scares.

With the movie being almost all silence – sometimes without even background noise (one of the characters, and the actor herself, is deaf, so they sometimes have the audio playing from her perspective) – its very tense. Its probably a good thing the movie is relatively short at 90 minutes as you may not be able to handle the tension if movie was longer!

Quiet eating (and drinking) required

One thing I was a bit worried about before going was about people talking/eating during the movie. One of the things I don’t like about the cinema is idiots talking or using phone during the movie but at least in a “normal” movie there were be parts of movie which are noisy. This movie is 90% silent – if not more. I had read beforehand that people were complaining about people eating noisy food during the movie or themselves worried about when they could chew popcorn and not make a sound! Some people suggesting to not have any snacks at all!

Thankfully the screening we were in was pretty quiet. It was a weekday after work at about 630. When we arrived there were just 2 other people, in the end about 20. Everyone behaved themselves!!👏🏻👏🏻 (Although one woman had a bit of a coughing fit near the end – not her fault – and I felt bad for her as she probably just needed a noisy bit in movie to have a proper good cough to clear the cough!).

Box Office success

The movie has done really well in the box office – one of highest opening box office of the year so far – likely to change since we have not hit blockbuster season. Saying that though, it is the best opening ever (in the US) for an Original Horror Movie. 3rd highest of all time after IT (2017) and Paranormal Activity 3 (2011).

I would highly recommend watching A Quiet Place. Brilliant movie. Great performances by all the actors. And to be honest, I am not a fan of horror movies so rarely watch them but I am very happy I decided to watch it. The last horror movie I watched I think was Life last year which I liked – that was not really a gory type of horror movie – but A Quiet Place is better.

Have you watched it? What did you think? Are you going to watch it? Still not sure? Here is the final trailer for A Quiet Place (sort of spoilers in trailer – as per usual nowadays – I generally avoid watching trailers):
